Ornaments, Mascots and the Motormeter |
|
|
It's said that the Boyce Motormeter was the birth of hood ornaments back in 1912. Their external radiator caps sported a thermometer as the temp gauge and it didn't take long before companies were dressing up the framework.
Soon hood ornaments or "mascots" became as much of an art form as the automobiles they rode on. Such an array of makes, years and models adds up to some great online voyeurism and could easily take hours to wade through.
Like most things car related, there are plenty of opportunities in buying, selling and trading hood ornaments. Everything from standard equipment to aftermarket and custom can be found for a price.
If you're content simply taking in the beautiful features of a mascot without the whole car attached there are some very affordable replicas to be had with base mounts that turn them into fantastic paper weights.
Check out some scale mascot models at diecastauto.com. |
