The Bumper Car Titling Dilemma |
|
|
Pictures have been floating around the internet for some time with the heading "Tom Wright's street legal bumper cars." These amazing creations are an example of the challenges faced by custom car enthusiasts everywhere.
Having been duly licensed in California, the DMV "corrected their registration" and deemed them un-streetable.
The sad reality is that anyone pulling a car out of a field, building from a kit or discovering a treasure hidden in a garage for a decade with a lost title is at the mercy of the laws governing their state, and these laws vary widely.
Some states require a bonding period of several years before you would receive a clean title, others just do a brief assessment for tax valuation.
The inconsistencies have created companies in liberal states leveraging their ability to secure registration for customers who then transfer ownership to their own area but be cautious. Paying hundreds of dollars for this service still doesn't guarantee acceptance at your local DMV.
Check out your states laws regarding Title Transfers or Custom Built Car Registration. |
