'53 Inline 6 Beats Bonneville Record at 215 mph |
|
|
Off on the fringe of the car world there're some guys missing two cylinders that seem to be keeping up with the v8's just fine. They're racing at the strip, hitting the salt flats and cruising main street with their modified straight and slant 6's.
Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, AMC, Pontiac and even Hudson were some of the companies that took advantage of the smooth and balanced engine design that still has its fans today. A wealth of aftermarket performance parts are keeping modified cars on the street, as well as high performance applications.
One example is a record breaking run of a 1938 Roadster powered by an inline 6 from a '53 GMC truck. Mechanical fuel injection, being bored out to 322 ci and running a nitro/alcohol mixture is a testament to just how much these engines can be modified.
If you want to start simple, you can find intakes, exhaust, cams and complete rebuild kits for 6's at Patrick's antique cars and trucks. They love to answer questions so give them a call and request a catalog.
