New Mexico: Golf You Can Afford |
The economy? Been better, but, alas, there's still golf. And if you head to New Mexico this year with your buds, your reward will be affordable green fees and value-priced stay-and-play packages on postcard-beautiful courses.
New Mexico is home to Pinon Hills, a desert layout in Farmington that's universally regarded as one of the nation's best municipal golf course experiences. For green fees of $33 on a weekday or $38 weekend, Pinon Hills offers rolling fairways framed by pinon and junipers as well as shots over sandstone canyons and wide arroyos.
Emerging as a serious player in the golf-trail genre is Golf on the Santa Fe Golf Trail, a marketing alliance that features eight championship-level courses in high-desert settings. The menu includes the Ken Dye-designed Paa-Ko-Ridge course (see photo) in Sandia Park, a spectacular layout with $59 green fees (Monday-Thursday, cart not included). You can take advantage of special packages offered by Golf on the Santa Fe Trail, or make your own tee times and play the courses individually.
