Horsing Around with Mark Kayser |
There aren't many "new" ways to hunt big game, so you have to get creative if you're looking for new thrills. Let's think about pronghorns. Forget about stalking, decoying and sitting at waterholes in a blind; what about using a horse?
North American Hunter whitetail columnist Mark Kayser loves to horse around for pronghorns, but the idea wasn't his. It was hatched by cowboy/guide Rick Richards of Dakota Ranch Outfitters after observing wary pronghorns lounge within spitting distance of livestock. Richards hides behind his grazing horses, then gradually nudges the horses into bow range of unsuspecting pronghorn.
"I had to see it to believe it, but it really works," Kayser says. "The pronghorns rarely give the horses a second look. I've hunted pronghorns for more than two decades and this tactic is definitely a breakthrough for getting within bow range."
