Start 2010 with this Low-Budget Hunting Adventure |
|
|
We're in the midst of winter's grip, but don't become a couch potato ... yet. You can start 2010 with a fun hunt in your own backyard, or pretty darn close. Coyotes have invaded nearly every nook and cranny of North America. They're also an urban nuisance, so start your hunt close to home.
The call of choice for most coyote hunters is the rabbit in distress, but by switching up calls, you can often fool war-wary coyotes. To change things up, try electronic calls of squealing birds or distress calls of piglets, goats and rodents. We're familiar with these sounds in suburbs and farmyards across the country, so it only makes sense hungry coyotes are accustomed to them, too.
To lure an urbanized coyote, you need to scout for thick, nasty cover, slightly removed from the densest part of the city. Creeks, waterways, overgrown lots and hedgerows all offer daytime escape cover for napping coyotes. Setting up close to these areas and emitting the sound of a panicked goat could be the start of a warm winter memory ... for you, that is.
Johnny Stewart Calls offer a great selection of calls to get you started; visit their site now.
