December 15, 2009 Mark Kayser's Keys For Late-Season Whitetails
Sooner or later we're all faced with a long shot, whether it's a whitetail across a vast green field or a pronghorn across a cactus-ridden sagebrush flat. Here are three tips for making the shot:
1. Don't Focus On The Distance
Well, maybe we should rephrase that: Don't focus on the number. Of course you need to be aware of the distance, but don't psych yourself out by obsessing over how many yards the shot is. Think about things like the wind and your positioning so that an intimidating number isn't running through your head over and over again and blocking out everything else.
2. Don't Question Your Rifle's Ability
Of course, this means you must have a gun you can trust from long range. One option is McMillan's new Long Range Hunting Rifle (LRH). Precision tolerances separate great rifles from the rest, and the LRH platform is based on the McMillan G30 custom long or short action.
3. Don't Go With the Wrong Cartridge
Benchrest aficionados and snipers rely on three main cartridges: .308 Win., .300 Win. and the .338 Lapua Mag. All three are included in the LRH lineup, and can handle everything from pronghorns to brown bears.
