The Real Story Behind Record Catfish |
 |
|
The Scene: Lightning bolts streak across the horizon, thunder crashes in the midnight sky, and a 130-pound blue catfish thrashes at the surface of the Missouri River. Greg Bernal hangs on desperately.
The Problem: Greg and his girlfriend, Janet, have two nets in the boat. The 4 ½-foot cat already tore up one of them; the second is tangled on something in the bow.
"Please hurry," Greg pleads with Janet as she as she fights with the stuck net. "We're going to lose the state record here."
The Record: He should've said "We're going to lose the world record here." Except, of course, they didn't. Janet pried the second net free and used it along with the battered first net to pin the monster against the side of the boat. Then, it took the pair 15 more minutes to wrestle the biggest blue anyone's ever caught onto the deck.
The Full Story: Click here to see it—along with quotes from Greg and Janet that you won't find anywhere else. Plus, how'd you like to know what gear they were using? OK, here you go:
Rod & Reel: A 6-½-foot Penn PSB 6630 rod with a Penn 320 GT reel.
Line: Berkley's Big Game, 40-pound, low-vis green monofilament.
Hook: A 7/0 Kahle, with a 4-inch chunk of an Asian carp that jumped into their boat earlier that night.
