Bet You Didn't Know This ...
Mother's Day
On Mother's Day we honor the women who reared us. In some cases, they were directly responsible for our passion for fishing. In others, they nurtured our growing interest by cheerfully accepting the catfish and bluegills we brought home from the pond—and by taking in stride the remnants of crickets and redworms they turned out of our jeans pockets on wash day.

For those, and many other things they did, we say: "Thank you to mothers everywhere."

But how does this stern-looking woman fit in? Julia Ward Howe was a national force in her time, and was one of the first to promote the concept of Mother's Day in the U.S. More accurately, her "Mother's Day For Peace" proposal was intended to be a war protest by mothers around the world.

Ironically, she was also best known for writing the lyrics to "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," the most famous song to emerge from the Civil War.

You're not likely to find words as stirring as "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" on any Mother's Day card, but here are a few websites that'll help you out. All three feature free, printable Mother's Day cards:
