Build a Backyard Bluebird House

Bluebird House
"The bluebird carries the sky on his back."
- Henry David Thoreau, Journal, April 3, 1852

Is there an animal more synonymous with happiness than the bluebird? Its sweet song and knockout color combination win us over and has led to a loyal following of admirers in the North American Bluebird Society.

Unfortunately, there's been a decline in the bluebird population, in part due to the loss of trees that provide nesting holes. The good news: You're handy, so you can help bring back the bluebirds by building a nestbox.

Place the nestbox in an open area with scattered trees. A wooded area that's at least 200 feet from the nextbox will provide protection for baby bluebirds. Mount it on a smooth metal pole to deter climbing predators. Also, check your nestbox at least once a week for problems and to track the number of eggs or young.
