Deck Screw Alters How You Walk

Kreg
We should explain. You see, when walking on a typical deck — especially barefooted — we walk apprehensively to avoid splinters around deck screws that poke holes in our dogs. Ouch! But we've found a clever fastening system that restores free-wheeling pep to our step and gives the deck a clean, custom-built look.

We recently tried the new Kreg Deck Jig Concealed Fastening System ($99). Kreg's method: Toescrew the deck boards. Its operation is akin to Kreg's successful pocket-hole system. An angled drill guide precisely positions and pilots a stepped drill bit into the deck board edge. You then fasten the board with Kreg Deck Screws.

The kit includes 100 screws (enough for a 5 x 5 ft. deck), so you'll need more. At $49 for a box of 700 (enough for a 10 x 20-ft. deck), the fasteners are pricey, but the total cost is still comparable to or better than other concealed-fastener systems.
