What's He Doing Behind That Tree? |
|
|
He's coaching us on the benefits of putting down roots. He's Daniel Butler, author of How to Plant a Tree, and he's behind all efforts to plant trees to increase home values, beautify urban areas and combat climate change.
The bond between homeowners — especially woodworkers — and trees is strong, and this pocket-size publication honors that by going beyond simple explanations of how to plant and care for trees. It explains the meaning behind various trees, something that those who work with wood will appreciate. Examples: The Vikings believed stars hung below the canopy of "the world ash," and the Buddha is said to have found enlightenment while meditating under a sacred fig.
Butler is big on planting trees for ceremonies. He recommends planting an aromatic bay tree or fruit-bearing orange tree to commemorate purchasing a new home. He also provides suggestions for tree-planting ceremonies (e.g., retirement). For example, you should plant the tree on the day of the baptism or naming ceremony.
How to Plant a Tree "closes the circle" for those who build with wood. It's available now, just in time for Earth Day and Arbor Day — good days to put down roots.
